Homemade liqueurs make some of the most charming gifts of the season, especially when they’re made from clean, natural ingredients and given a little patience. My three favorites are Holiday Aquavit, Five-Day Limoncello and Triple Sec à la Maison They are simple to prepare, exceptionally close to the real thing in flavor, and delightfully personal.
The only trick is timing. While the limoncello can be ready in less than a week, the aquavit and triple sec need about 30 days to steep and develop maximum depth. After straining, the flavors mellow beautifully with a few extra weeks in the bottle, so it pays to start early. I usually set aside a quiet afternoon in early November, ensuring the bottles will be perfect by Christmas.
Use organic ingredients whenever possible, especially citrus peels. The peels carry the flavor in their essential oils, so you don’t want to extract any pesticides along with them. Wash and dry the fruit well before peeling; a sharp vegetable peeler will remove the fragrant outer skin without taking the bitter white pith. If a little pith remains, just gently scrape it away with a paring knife.
All of my liqueur recipes are sweetened with allulose, a plant-based natural sweetener with zero carbs or calories and none of the off-flavors common to other sugar-free options.
